Taconora, a new Sonoran-style taqueria, is preparing to make its debut at 956 Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach.

The company’s first location is set to open in the former home of Smash and Stack Burger, according to a social media announcement. Owner Mario Abeyta tells What Now San Diego in an exclusive interview that the restaurant is currently scheduled to open in mid-January 2026. While an exact opening date has not yet been announced, the team is working through renovations. Customers can expect a traditional taquería menu centered on Sonoran-style flour tortillas, grilled proteins, and classic offerings.

Taconora is a new concept rooted in Abeyta’s family background, with both of his parents hailing from Sonora, Mexico. The menu draws inspiration from the food he grew up eating, including beans, rice, and grilled meats prepared with a focus on quality and flavor. Abeyta said the goal is to recreate the same dishes and experiences centered around family gatherings and shared meals. The Pacific Beach location will serve as the brand’s entry point into the San Diego market.

The restaurant will offer familiar taquería staples, with a notable emphasis on Sonoran-style flour tortillas. Corn tortillas will also be available for customers who prefer a more traditional option. Protein offerings will include carne asada and two versions of al pastor, including a classic pork pastor and a sirloin-style pastor. The concept is designed to stay simple while highlighting technique and regional influence.

Pacific Beach stood out to Abeyta due to its laid-back atmosphere and proximity to the beach. He noted that the neighborhood felt like a natural fit after visiting the space and spending time in the area. The location is a short walk from the boardwalk and surrounded by a mix of residents and visitors.

While the current focus remains on opening in Pacific Beach, Abeyta noted that future expansion is a possibility if the concept is well-received. Additional sites in Southern California are under consideration, though no further locations have been confirmed. For now, the team is concentrated on opening its doors and introducing the concept to the community.
