The Funky Frenchie, a San Diego-based French Bulldog-inspired brunch concept, is getting ready to open its first brick-and-mortar location in Lemon Grove at 7860 Broadway.
The company’s first storefront is set to take over the former home of Lemon Grove Deli & Grill, according to recent documentation submitted to the San Diego Department of Environmental Health and Quality. While an exact opening date has not been confirmed, Co-owner Brandon Renteria tells What Now San Diego that the team is aiming for a mid- to late-December launch, pending final approvals. When it opens, customers can expect fun brunch items, a full range of coffee drinks, and an outdoor patio with a bar-style counter unique to the area.
Renteria says the Lemon Grove location will introduce a more immersive version of the brand’s personality. Plans include a dog-friendly patio, community-driven features such as a chalk-drawing area, and rotating murals by local artists. The space will also feature a Frenchie Wall dedicated to French bulldogs from around San Diego, with a Polaroid camera available for customers who want to add their pets to the display.
The Funky Frenchie began as a food truck rooted in nostalgia from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, gaining traction through markets, pop-ups, and catering events across the county. Establishing a brick-and-mortar represents the next step for the family-run business, allowing them to grow the concept in a dedicated space while keeping the food truck active for select seasonal events. The team plans to continue appearing at community gatherings, including the San Diego Makers Arcade Holiday Fair on December 13 and 14.
The menu will feature the items that helped build the company’s following, including Apple Tart Tartine, Tiramisu Toast, breakfast burritos, and French bulldog-shaped waffles. Customers can also expect a variety of sandwiches, salads, specialty drinks, and a weekly featured beverage, as well as coffee, espresso, lattes, and hot chocolate.
