North County San Diego’s first package-free, zero-waste grocery store is on its way to Encinitas. Local Scoop is in the works at a yet-to-be-disclosed location with a mission to provide carefully-sourced foods in bulk.

Coast News Group first reported that local founder Katie Fletcher is in partnership with Rewild Sourcing who specialize in supply chain management and ecological impact reporting. The partnership will allow Fletcher to stock Local Scoop with locally made products and foods that go beyond the typical dry goods you might find in a buy-by-the-bulk grocery store.

Fletcher has set up an Indiegogo page for locals and future customers to contribute to financing the opening of Local Scoop. There you’ll find the company values and benefits to a package-free store.

In store, customers are welcome to bring their own containers, grab an in-store recycled container that has been sanitized, or purchase a container. Once weighed and tagged, customers can fill up on as much or as little as they may need of a variety of foods on hand then head to check out.

Local Scoop is open to suggestions for what to stock on their shelves, which currently include oats, grains, superfoods, coffee, teas, hummus, protein powder, milk and nut milks, to name a few.

Grab your jars and reusable containers because Local Scoop is projected to open in Fall 2022. Visit their Indiegogo page to read up on the benefits of package-free groceries on the environment and purchase a membership plan or zero waste starter kit. Follow on Instagram for more information.
