Benihana could be headed for San Mateo! The Teppanyaki restaurant applied for its ABC license with the state this week to operate at 2204 Bridgepointe Parkway in the Bridgepointe Shopping Center.
Currently, the closest Benihana restaurant to this area is in Burlingame, otherwise you’d have to drive up to San Francisco or all the way down to Cupertino to experience the ancient art of Teppanyaki-style cooking. Guests are seated at a communal hibachi grill, where personal chefs prepare a meal right before your eyes with style.
Benihana was founded in 1964 by Japanese-American wrestler Hiroaki “Rocky” Aoki in New York City. At the time, it was popularized by celebrities like Muhammad Ali and The Beatles. The brand expanded with a second location in Chicago in 1968, and has since continued to grow with locations all over the world.
Based on the timing of our source, it’s likely that Benihana in San Mateo will open in the coming months. Representatives for the company could not be reached for comment.
