Family-run restaurant Babette, known for its sustainably sourced fare, is set to close permanently on October 31. The owners shared on social media that the restaurant is closing, citing financial difficulties.

Sustainably-Focused Babette to Bid Adieu

A neighborhood favorite, Babette is located at 2033 San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley, California. It was founded by Joan Ellis and Patrick Hooker, who were earlier owners of Pani E Dolci Bakery and Aubergine Catering.

The restaurant is known for its sustainably sourced, internationally inspired cuisine. The eatery offers a cozy dining experience and a garden patio shaded by a large redwood tree. The iconic tree has witnessed several weddings over the years.

After years of serving the community, Babette announced it will close its doors by the end of October. In an Instagram post, the owners of the restaurant said they could not make the numbers work.

“It is with deep regret and sadness that we must announce the closure of Babette. Our last day of business will be October 31st. Like so many of our friends and fellow small business owners, we just could not make the numbers work,” the post said.

Babette Marks the Closing with Special Musical Evenings

As Babette prepares to close, the restaurant plans to celebrate its final month with the community it has long cherished. Guests can enjoy special musical evenings under the redwood tree. Artists, including local clarinetist Ben Goldberg, will perform alongside different ensembles each week.

“There are 4 more Wednesdays left for music under the stars. Ben Goldberg is a local treasure and an exceptionally talented clarinetist. Each week Ben will play with a different ensemble – these are rare appearances and we hope you can catch one or more of these special evenings,” the post read.

The restaurant will host its 22nd and final wedding this month, and looks back on the countless moments it has shared with families, friends, and regulars over the years. In the post, the owners said they will miss cooking for their guests and the community that has supported Babette throughout its journey.

“We will miss cooking for you all and more than anything, we will miss the beautiful community that has gathered around the Redwood Tree, supported the incredible musicians who we have had the great pleasure to spotlight, and our regulars who came for the food, the love, and a little bit of grace in these tumultuous times,” the post said.
