Butter and Crumble Opening Second Location

Butter and Crumble, a girl boss-owned bakery specializing in laminated pastries and layered crumble cakes, is set to open a new brick-and-mortar location in San Francisco at 301 Union Street.

The bakery’s second location is scheduled to open in Summer 2026, according to the bakery’s social media announcement. The Union Street site follows the brand’s first retail location at 271 Francisco Street in North Beach, which opened in October 2023.

“I can’t believe it’s finally official,” owner Sophie Smith said on the social media announcement. “The Cake Shop by Butter & Crumble is coming. I am so excited to build the next iteration of creativity and playfulness for me and my team, returning to my first love CAKES.”

Butter and Crumble began in 2020 as a home-based cake business during culinary school, later expanding through pop-ups and shared commercial kitchens. The North Beach location transformed the former Tante Marie’s Cooking School into a permanent retail bakery, and the Union Street site continues the bakery’s growth while maintaining its focus on handcrafted, playful desserts.

The new shop will include a casual seating area where customers can enjoy pastries fresh from the oven, including lemon-ricotta pistachio slices, chocolate-ganache toffee, seasonal creations, and laminated favorites such as croissants and cruffins. Daily offerings include a gluten-free and a vegan option, while the coffee menu features espresso drinks and hot beverages made with beans from Abanico Coffee Roasters, a woman-owned San Francisco roaster.

Butter and Crumble’s second location reflects the bakery’s commitment to creativity, quality, and expansion without sacrificing the attention to detail that built their following. The Union Street site will provide a bright, inviting space for customers to enjoy both familiar favorites and new creations from the bakery’s team.
