According to a recent business license application, Tamari Sushi at 2215 San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley has closed down — and a restaurant called Daruma Sushi is taking its place. The upcoming concept will neighbor establishments such as Afghan Burrito, Gallegos Mexican restaurant, and Jack in the Box.

What Now San Francisco briefly spoke to Daruma’s owner, Angie Yang, however, she was hesitant to provide additional information at this time due to still being very early in the process.

Nevertheless, the application provides some insight into what’s to come — it lists the space at 1216 square feet and discloses that Daruma intends to offer 14 private, off-street parking spaces. Whether the new business is planning to renovate or redesign is unclear, but Yang has applied for permission to install a new sign.

The menu has not been announced, but it can be reasonably assumed that Daruma will offer sushi and other Japanese fare based on the name. An opening date has not yet been determined.
