According to a recent beer and wine license application, the Thai comfort food restaurant Funky Elephant is debuting a new location at 1270 Valencia Street — near establishments such as Arizmendi Bakery, Big Mouth Burgers, and the food truck Corazon Mexicano.

Co-owner Supasit Puttikaew tells What Now San Francisco, “It’s about time for us to grow. Our customer base isn’t just in Berkeley, it’s all over the Bay Area, and we would like to introduce ourselves to a new neighborhood.”

The original Funky Elephant can be found in Berkeley at 1313 Ninth Street, Suite 120, and is known for non-traditional Thai cooking. The menu offers items like vermicelli curry, “Hella Drunken Mussels,” and khao mun gai.

According to Puttikaew, the concept and menu will remain consistent, at least initially.

Puttikaew describes Funky Elephant as “tiny but mighty.” Offering only 16 seats at its Berkeley restaurant, the eatery has been repeatedly ranked as some of the best Thai food in Berkeley, and is listed as a Michelin Guide restaurant.

Funky Elephant on Valencia Street will open in the summer of 2023. Stay tuned to Funky Elephant’s Facebook and Instagram for additional updates.
