According to SF Eater, Japanese restaurant chain Benihana is gearing up to open a new outpost in Emeryville.

Taking over a vacant, 13,500-square-foot spot at 1890 Powell Street that previously belonged to Chevys, the eatery will land near establishments such as Hilton Garden Inn, Public Market Emeryville, and Trader Vic’s.

What Now San Francisco reached out to One Group Hospitality to inquire about their plans for the spot, but they could not provide additional information before publication.

Nevertheless, the Mayor of Emeryville, David Mourra, shares that “negotiations [are] ongoing,” the Journal reports.

For readers who are unfamiliar with Benihana, the business offers a brief introduction on its website: “From our beginnings as a family business with one Benihana restaurant in New York to our recognition today as a cultural icon with 79 Benihana restaurants in the United States, Caribbean, and Central and South America, our success continues to be a result of our relationships with our guests, investors and employees.”

An opening date has not been announced yet, so stay tuned for updates.

  • Benihana is opening in Emeryville, not North Beach San Francisco. (Maybe that’s why the mayor of Emeryville was quoted)
