Mensho Tokyo SF is opening a new location at 4258 Piedmont Avenue, according to a permit pending in Oakland.

Permit details reveal the application is for an On-Sale Beer & Wine license from the California Alcoholic Beverage Control.

The space on Piedmont was previously home to Little Shin Shin, which, after 40 years of business, closed in June of this year. Other restaurants on the street include Lo Coco’s, Shimizu Cuisine, and Timeless Coffee.

Co-Founder Abram Plaut shares on his blog Ramen Beast that he and Mensho Tokyo SF’s Chef Tomoharu Shono met while Plaut visited Shono’s original Menya Shono ramen location in Tokyo’s Ichigaya neighborhood.

At this point, Shono ran a collection of ramen shops in Japan, and Plaut, originally from San Francisco, was a Playboy Japan ramen columnist. Not long after, they teamed up and — with the ambition to offer a genuine Japanese ramen dining experience — Plaut and Shono opened Mensho Tokyo SF together in 2016.

Mensho Tokyo SF is located at 672 Geary Street and operates from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The most popular menu items in the past have been the Toripaitan Ramen and the Vegan Tantanmen.

What Now San Francisco was unable to contact a company representative by the time of publication.
