According to MSN, Bar Skula, a new concept described as a sequel to Luka’s — a taproom and lounge that closed in 2022 — is preparing to open in Oakland.
“We’re definitely trying to balance something new with the classics that our customers want and expect,” Rick Mitchell, a former co-owner of Luka’s and an owner of Bar Skula, tells the Journal. He adds, “We don’t want people to be disappointed when they show up.”
“It’s still a very difficult time for restaurants in Oakland… but we’re going to barrel through regardless,” Mitchell continues.
Coming to 542 Grand Avenue near Lake Merritt, taking over an address that was formerly home to Sidebar — a post-work cocktail hangout that closed in January 2024 — the restaurant will land near establishments such as Ahn’s Quarter Pound Burger, the American food diner Grand Lake Kitchen, and the Korean fare eatery Jong Ga House.
What Now San Francisco reached out to Mitchell to learn more about his plans for the upcoming eatery; however, he could not provide additional information before the time of publication.
Nevertheless, the Journal reports that the menu “will have an emphasis on a raw bar and seafood inspired by cevicherias in Peru and marisquerias in Mexico,” as well as feature some of the most popular dishes from the Luka’s menu, including the burger, shrimp, and grits.
Bar Skula is slated to open by the end of 2025.
