Sandy’s, the Bay Area pop-up known for muffalettas “stacked high with soppressata, mortadella, prosciutto, and provolone,” has signed a lease for a permanent location on Haight Street.

The shop will open in early 2023 at 1457 Haight Street in San Francisco, landing between Bizza and Pork Store Cafe. Other restaurants in the vicinity include VeganBurg San Francisco, Blue Front Deli and Cafe, and Hippie Thai Street Food.

On the Sandy’s website, owners Peterson Harter and Moni Frailing share, “the building was previously a small sandwich shop/cafe and it is small. We will not be able to do everything we would like to do,” for example, “sell gumbo or red beans and rice or alcohol.” However, they clarify that they are enthusiastic about the opportunity and are moving forward regardless.

According to Eater SF, minimal but necessary planned renovations include updating the electrical and plumbing to meet code. At only 600 square feet, Sandy’s on Haight will offer a few tables indoors and potentially a parklet in the future, as well as delivery options via third-party apps.

This “New Orleans-inspired sandwich shop” that claims to serve the “best muffaletta this side of the Mississippi,” was started by Harter and Frailing during the pandemic. Harter, originally from New Orleans, and Frailing “created the muffuletta sandwich [they] wished [they] had growing up,” according to the shop’s website. Before finding a permanent space, Sandy’s held a yearlong residency at Maison Corbeaux and held pop-ups throughout the Bay Area.

According to Eater, there will be some new additions to the menu. The focus will remain on the muffulettas, but the andouille melt and the pickled egg salad sandwich will make a return. The publication reports that Harter has also discussed adding a turkey or vegetarian sandwich and seasonal salads. True to style, Zapp’s chips and brown butter chocolate chip cookies will be available for purchase.

What Now San Francisco briefly contacted Frailing, but she couldn’t provide additional information before publication.
