Schlok’s Bagels and Lox, a portmanteau coined from the names of co-owners Zack Schwab and James Lok, is opening a permanent bagel shop just a few blocks from Alamo Square Park.
For months, Schwab and Lok have been cooking their bagels at Eclectic Cookery, a commissary kitchen in Hunter’s Point, and selling them out of The Snug, Schwab’s California comfort food joint in Pacific Heights, where they’ve been flying off the racks.
“The success was both exciting and frustrating,” Schwab noted in conversation with What Now San Francisco, adding that the pop-up couldn’t seem to keep up the overwhelming demand. This prompted the two restaurateurs to consider a more permanent solution. “Bagels are having a moment right now,” said Schwab, “The New York bagel is great, but we’re excited to join the folks who are paving the way for the San Francisco Bagel.”
Schlok’s permanent home will be at 1263 Fell Street, near RT Rotisserie, Hahdough, and Nopalito. According to Schwab, “It will also be something to look forward to for anyone visiting the DMV,” which is just one block over.
The new shop will be a take-out only operation, specializing in “reliably damn good” bagels, lox, smears, and a few bagel sandwiches, and will hopefully be open by Labor Day.
