Smokin Woods BBQ Is Coming to the FiDi

"People don't necessarily cross the water from Oakland, and vice versa. But us coming here maybe will bring a little traffic to the area downtown," says Chef-Owner James Woodard.

Smokin Woods BBQ, a staple in Oakland’s Temescal neighborhood since 2019, is planning to launch a new location in the Financial District.

At 235 California Street — home to Andersen Bakery back in 2017 — the upcoming eatery will soon neighbor notable establishments such as the Mediterranean restaurant Barcha, the cocktail bar Pagan Idol, and Tyler Florence’s Wayfare Tavern.

“A lot of people want us back over there in San Francisco,” Chef-Owner James Woodard tells the San Francisco Business Times. He adds, “People don’t necessarily cross the water from Oakland, and vice versa. But us coming here maybe will bring a little traffic to the area downtown.”

For readers who are unfamiliar with the concept, Smokin Woods BBQ began as a catering business in 2013, opened as a pop-up in Oakland in 2017, and made that same Oakland spot its permanent home in 2019.

On the menu, patrons can expect to find Texas-style BBQ classics such as brisket, chicken, and pork ribs, as well as healthier options like grilled salmon and grilled asparagus.

The California Street space is slated to open before the end of the year.
