Numerous Santa Cruz wharf restaurants have temporarily shuttered due to the infrastructure’s recent collapse, according to ABC7 — including local favorite Stagnaro Bros.

“Stagnaro Bros closed until further notice… Due to the condition of the wharf, we will remain closed indefinitely. We are so grateful for the love and support you’ve shown during this time. We’ll update you as soon as we have more information,” the business shares in an Instagram post on December 27.

“Thankfully, all of our staff and customers have been safely evacuated, and we’re relieved that everyone is OK,” it continues.

For readers who are unfamiliar with Stagnaro Bros, the concept’s website offers a brief history of the restaurant: “In 1937, with a small loan from his mother, Giovanni opened a small seafood market and cocktail room on the Municipal Wharf. When the war was over, he was joined in ownership by his brother Ernesto.”

The statement continues, “Their industriousness kept the new business alive throughout the Great Depression and World War II. With the brothers’ perseverance and the fortitude of their wives Mamie and Virginia, they expanded and added a restaurant and wholesale component to their company by 1947. The brothers remained the co-owners and operators until Giovanni’s death in 2004.”

“Today, Stagnaro Bros. proudly employs nine family members who strive to continue the traditions of hard work and family values while providing the same quality service and the largest selection of fresh and frozen seafood in the county to the community.”

What Now San Francisco reached out to the concept’s co-owners, Debbie and Scott McPherson, to inquire about their plans for reopening, but they could not provide additional information before publication.

Nevertheless, on Friday the business posts, “While Stagnaro Bros. may be closed for the holidays, we’re still taking orders from our wholesale market! Whether you’re looking for crab, fish, or other fresh seafood, we’re here to help.”
