According to SF Eater, Starter Bakery — a Bay Area-based concept known for its kouign amann, a laminated pastry from the Brittany region of France — is expanding in San Francisco, preparing to introduce a new outpost in Albany this October.
Coming to 1183 Solano Avenue, the bakery will land near establishments such as Hal’s Office Coffee, Little Star Pizza, and Tay Tah Cafe.
What Now San Francisco reached out to the bakery’s founder, Brian Wood, to learn more about what he has planned for the upcoming location; however, he could not provide additional information before publication.
Starter Bakery was founded in 2010, per its website, and quickly became known for its handmade pastries. In 2023, it began selling wholesale and debuted its first retail bakery cafe in Oakland’s Rockridge neighborhood. On the menu are freshly baked pastries, breads, desserts, salads, sandwiches, and coffee-based drinks, and the store is open Wednesday through Sunday.
In addition to operating Starter Bakery, Wood wrote a book on baking and pastry, Baking and Pastry: A Professional Approach for the San Francisco Baking Institute, where he also taught and developed the pastry program.
The business’s wholesale bakery is located at 901 Gilman Street in Berkeley, and the Rockridge Bakery Cafe can be found at 5804 College Avenue in Oakland.
Starter Bakery’s newest location is slated to open on October 11. Follow What Now San Francisco on Facebook to stay up to date on the latest restaurant happenings in the Bay Area.
