Berkeley Hat Company, a landmark headwear and accessories store on Telegraph Avenue, has announced that it will close after 50 years in business. The news was shared on social media by owner Carol Lipnick. To mark the occasion, the store is hosting a large farewell sale for the community.
Half-Century-Old Berkeley Hat Announces Closure
Bay Area’s largest men’s and women’s hat maker, Berkeley Hat Company, is saying goodbye to the locals. Founded in 1980, the company makes a variety of hats, including Panama Hats, French Berets, Top Hats, Captain’s Hats, and more.
Through an Instagram post, the company announced its closure and expressed gratitude to the community for its support. The post read, “This is a wonderful salute to Berkeley Hat Company. Thank you for a fantastic 50 years. Ms. Carol is so appreciative of Berkeley for loving my hats.”
The closure announcement surprised loyal fans of the hat company. Several customers and the local community shared heartfelt messages on the post, wishing the company well in its future endeavors. One of the fans wrote, “All good things must come to an end… enjoy retirement…it’s grand!”

The husband-wife duo, Carol Lipnick and Ed Dougherty, started the business in the 80s with a motto, “We top ‘em all.” After Ed’s passing, Carol continued operating the company on her own and has now decided to retire.”
