The History of Barnes & Noble Booksellers
The Barnes & Noble company originally dates back to 1873, when Charles M. Barnes started selling books out of his home in Wheaton, Illinois. In 1917, his son collaborated with G. Clifford Noble in New York City to officially incorporate the business under the name Barnes and Noble.
Throughout the years, ownership and business operations underwent multiple changes. New innovations and experiments, such as “superstores,” were introduced. In 2009, Barnes & Noble ventured into the digital reading market through the introduction of its NOOK brand of e-reading items. In 2016, the company started introducing new prototype stores with modern designs, cafe items, and a customer focus.
In August 2019, Elliott Advisors (UK) Limited purchased Barnes & Noble and privatized it. James Daunt, a long-serving bookseller and Managing Director of Waterstones, took over as CEO.
The company under his leadership focused on local independence and a new orientation on community-based bookstores. Today, Barnes & Noble has been serving hundreds of communities in the 50 states. It is continually adjusting to the changing nature of the bookselling market.
The closure reflects an ongoing shift in the retail landscape. Though it is driven by lease expiration, it shows how businesses have to undergo sudden changes. Readers can visit other nearby stores for an uninterrupted experience with the company.
