Nearly half a century ago, Rainbow opened its inaugural shop in the Mission District. Ever since, it has worked to stock the widest array of organic and locally sourced items at the most affordable rates.
Whenever possible, they source products from nearby organic farmers and vendors. Beyond groceries, the co-op serves as a resource for the community for exchanging knowledge on food, health, and sustainability.

Looking Back at Rainbow Grocery’s Five-Decade Legacy
In 1975, Rainbow launched its first store on 16th Street, just off Valencia. The store began as a vegetarian-friendly alternative to conventional grocery offerings. Launched before the rise of natural foods, the store relied entirely on volunteers.
The store’s success enabled it to transition from being entirely volunteer-run to employing paid staff. In 1983, customer loans funded Rainbow’s move to Mission Street at 15th. With a team of 105 employees, Rainbow became the city’s largest health-food retailer.
Continued growth prompted another move to its current, more spacious location. On April 25, 1996, the co-op reopened at 1745 Folsom Street for business once again. Ongoing community support has kept the co-op rooted in the neighborhood.
In a city defined by constant change, Rainbow Grocery Cooperative remains a rare constant. It hasn’t just endured; it has prospered under its worker-owned structure. As many community institutions are overly priced today, Rainbow’s continued service proves beyond retail success. Longtime shoppers say trust keeps them coming back to this iconic co-op.
