A New Microbrewery Called Distant West Brewing Will Soon Open in the Ballard Area

Distant West's name was derived from Greg's great grandfather who kept a journal when emigrating from Ireland in the 1910s.

According to a recent permit filing, a new microbrewery called Distant West Brewing is set to open soon at 1406 NW 53rd St #1A.

“Our opening date is going to be based on final permitting, licensing, and arrival of final materials, ingredients, cellaring, and equipment. My goal based on a semi-educated guess is late November or early December. The number one goal is to have a solid opening lineup, and I don’t mind waiting a bit longer if it means we’ll open with a better product,” founder of Distant West, Greg Macaulay told What Now Seattle.

“I imagine the long-term supporters of the Ballard brewing scene will be excited to share a pint in a familiar space. We’ll be the second brewery to occupy the space, and we have big shoes to fill. (Reuben’s anyone? They’re doing OK.) I’m looking forward to having people see the adaptations and changes that have been progressing in the last few months since we moved in. We’re not reinventing the wheel, but I think it’s going to be noticeable.”

“Moving into this unique space creates a culture of purpose. From a front-of-house perspective, this means the tap options will need to be curated and concise. The goal is to not play it safe, but still offer familiar favorites. West Coast Styles are big here, so expect some crisp Pale Ales and robust West Coast IPAs. However, I believe we will have a spectrum of styles that will fit many different palettes. I have a stout that has converted several “I don’t like beer” people into “I like beer” people. That’s where I start for most people not familiar with the seemingly unlimited variety of styles,” he added.

Greg expressed that even though his “grandiose” master plan is to convert all the “I don’t drink beer” people into beer aficionados, the team recognizes the need for variety beyond beer. They will bring in plenty of both Alcoholic and N/A options for members of the group who for whatever reason aren’t having a beer that day.

Patrons can expect local wines and ciders, seltzers, N/A Hop Waters, and sodas. The team wants to ensure there isn’t anyone in your party missing out because they don’t want a beer, Greg stated. Even though the main attraction will be the beverages, Greg will have a few events planned that he himself hasn’t seen before, and depending on logistics of space and timing, the fun standards of Trivia, Music Bingo, Etc.
