Founded in 1934, Carvel Ice Cream was born practically by accident.
“It all started during Memorial Day weekend in 1934,” says the ice cream and ice-cream-cake brand’s website. “When Tom Carvel’s ice cream truck got a flat tire, he pulled over and began selling the slightly melted ice cream. Much to his surprise, people preferred it softer. And the rest, as they say, is history. Today, our delicious treats and classic ice cream cakes are a staple at birthdays, holiday parties, or any occasion worth celebrating.”
With well over 350 locations in the U.S., Carvel has now set its sights on Sarasota, where it has signed an agreement with franchisee Bobby Enrico to open four locations in the next four years. The first will open in early 2026, at 8382 S Tamiami Trail.
“I’m originally from New Jersey, which is where I knew Carvel from,” Enrico told What Now on Wednesday. “When I retired out of the car business after 25 years, I was still a little too young to retire completely. So we decided to franchise with a brand that’s recognizable and influential. There are no Carvels in Sarasota yet, so we decided to bring the franchise there.”
Currently limited-time-only choices on the Carvel menu include Toasted Mashmallow Soft Serve, S’mores ice cream (scooped), and the S’mores Sundae Dasher: “Creamy toasted marshmallow soft serve layered with crunchy graham cracker crumbles and rich ribbons of fudge. Finished with whipped cream and a fudge drizzled – need we say s’more??”
Enrico says his previous business experience has led him to a consistent focus on a business’s local community.
“We’re excited to bring the brand to Sarasota, and we’re hoping it serves the community well. We’re going to heavily involve ourselves, working with local schools, and hopefully doing more than your typical local ice cream shop.”
