Espressos, tropical drinks and Cuban toast will be available at a new cafe coming to the south end of the city.

Kubana Kafe will be opening at 5130 S Dale Mabry Highway. It is taking over the former Sophia Coffee Shop space. Owner Debora Carrio told What Now Tampa she is hoping to open before December of this year.

The concept has been around since 2022 and started out as a food cart. Carrio and her team had been looking for a brick and mortar location, and when she heard the owner of Sophia Coffee Shop was selling her shop she jumped at the opportunity. Now, construction is ongoing inside to prepare for the opening.

“It’s all working out,” Carrio said.

Given the name, the coffee shop will have Cuban-inspired drinks, espressos and refreshers with mango and guava. Pastries will also be available for pickup or takeout, like croissants, bagels, empanadas and cheese pastries.

Kubana Kafe will be in the same plaza as Victoria’s Restaurant at the south side of the building. This area is north of MacDill Air Force Base and about 10 minutes to downtown Tampa. Carrio first teased the new project on Oct. 18 on social media.
