Gateway Subs – the St. Pete shop that made a name for itself selling half-pound sandwiches – is working to finalize its paperwork with the city of Pasadena and wrap up its recruitment efforts so they can open their new location at 2525 Pasadena Ave S on Nov 8, come “hell or high water,” says owner Grant Strayer.
“We think we’re a week away from getting all of our paperwork in order,” Strayer tells What Now Tampa. “The city of Pasadena is taking a little longer than expected, but it’s okay, they’re just doing their due diligence, and we’re going through needs of recruiting anywho. So we’re hoping to be done with everything this upcoming week, and then we hope to do a soft opening the following week, and regardless, hell or high water, we’re going to do a grand opening on Nov 8 and do a big giveaway, do 100 free subs.”
Gateway’s flagship location in St. Petersburg opened Nov 8 of last year and has garnered a devout following since then, all while making plenty of friends along the way, not least of which in the business community.
“Madeira Beach was kind of our first close [chamber of commerce], and they actually gifted us New Business of the Year last year, which is so funny because the first location’s not based there,” says Strayer.
Nevertheless, those positive, friendly vibes sit at the heart of Gateway’s mission and ethos, and in no small part explain its success.
On opening the new location, Strayer says, “we’re just really excited to treat people with love, care, compassion, trust, and the best dang sandwiches they’ve ever had – and also bring really great coffee to the area as well – and keep spreading good smiles and sandwiches.”
