“Whataburger will be coming to Brandon at the old Aussie Grill building,” said a post by Real Brandon LLC on Instagram late last year. “And as a HOMAGE, you can see where the old Whataburger building was in Brandon back in the day.”

The buzz has been growing as Whataburger makes its mark once more on the Tampa Bay area, in what has been felt as a kind of homecoming. It started, back in November, with a “ground-breaking” held at 10150 Ulmerton Road in Largo, marking the burger chain’s new beginning in the region, where it has been absent for about twenty years.

What Now reported on the then-upcoming Largo opening back in January, and now that opening has come off successfully.

“The Whataburger hype is finally here,” wrote Creative Loafing Tampa Bay last week. “The Texas-born burger chain made its Tampa Bay debut last month in the former Joella’s Hot Chicken location. Eight spots are planned to open across the Bay area by the end of 2027.”

Next up? That Brandon location, which will open at 1426 W Brandon Blvd this spring. A new Whataburger is also expected to open soon in Lutz.
