A Portuguesa Bakery, located at 118 St. Andrews Street in Cambridge, brings authentic Portuguese flavors to the community and is now preparing to expand to a new location in Kitchener at 271 King St W.
Founded by Maria and Mario De Sousa, the bakery has become a local favorite since its opening in 2023. Mario, a trained pastry chef from Sintra, Portugal, began his culinary journey at the age of nine and honed his skills in historic institutions in Portugal before moving to Toronto, where he eventually established the bakery with his wife, Maria. Now, the two are getting ready to open a second location, offering a daily assortment of fresh pastries, including the Portuguese Custard Tart, sandwiches, and Portuguese coffee. It’s unclear when this location will open, but the bakery’s social media suggests it will be soon.
A Portuguesa Bakery offers a variety of traditional Portuguese baked goods, including their signature pastéis de nata, known for their flaky crust and creamy custard filling. The menu also features soft, sweet massa sovada bread and spicy pork bifana sandwiches. In addition to these, customers can enjoy mini Berliners, cinnamon buns, and classic Canadian butter tarts with a Portuguese twist. The bakery also serves a selection of sandwiches, including steak and mushroom melts and ham and cheese croissants. Portuguese coffee is available to complement the pastries.
The location is an excellent spot for A Portuguesa Bakery’s second spot due to its substantial foot traffic from nearby offices, shops, and restaurants. It is situated close to popular attractions, such as the Kitchener Market and Victoria Park, which draw both locals and visitors. This area experiences a steady flow of people throughout the day, making it an ideal location for a bakery that serves quick, tasty treats and coffee. The spot offers good visibility and easy access for customers.
