Carbonic Coffee, a specialty cafe renowned for its clean design and commitment to high-quality brews, is expanding from Baldwin Village to a new location at 870 Dundas St. W. in Toronto.
The new cafe will replace Hamers Coffee, a beloved Dundas West staple that is set to close after five years in operation, according to blogTO. Hamers Coffee first opened in early 2020 and quickly earned a loyal following for its minimalist interior, standout sandwiches, and dedication to quality. Despite launching just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, it became a fixture in the neighbourhood.
Owner Derek Hamers announced the closure via Instagram in June, expressing gratitude for the chance to fulfill a five-year goal and thanking the community for its ongoing support. Hamers’ final day of service will be Sunday, July 13.
“By now, many of you have heard either directly or whisperings of ‘the big news.’ Hopefully that’s softened the blow for what I’m about to post,” Hamers wrote on Instagram. “After 5 years, Hamers Coffee will be permanently closing its doors. Our last service will be Sunday, July 13. It will be a grand service like no other in the history of Hamers. I feel excited for the future! I’ll spare all of you the, ‘this things I believe’ about the future of specialty coffee for a separate post because I want to thank so many people here. I want to thank everyone who has been a part of this shop at one point or another.”
Though the closure marks the end of an era, Carbonic Coffee’s arrival signals a promising continuation of the coffee culture at this address. Founded in 2019, Carbonic has built a strong reputation for delivering exceptional coffee experiences in thoughtfully designed spaces.
In their own announcement, Carbonic Coffee praised Hamers for its community impact and hinted that their new venture may include a sound studio, suggesting the new location could offer more than just coffee.
“We’re beyond stoked to take the torch from Derek and continue Hamers Coffee’s legacy,” Carbonic Coffee owner Donna Huang said on social media. “If you haven’t heard yet: Hamers is closing its doors, and Carbonic Coffee is opening a second location at 870 Dundas St. W.—keeping the spirit and the love for specialty coffee strong as ever. Hamers has been a neighbourhood staple for its vision, quality, and community. We’re grateful to carry that forward and brew what’s next. Rumour has it, a sound studio might be coming too.”
With a smooth transition underway, Dundas West residents can expect the legacy of Hamers to continue through a new chapter led by another independent Toronto coffee brand, committed to both craft and community.
