Edo Japan, a well-known Canadian quick-service restaurant chain specializing in Japanese teppan-style meals, is set to continue its expansion across Ontario. With over 200 locations nationwide and a goal of reaching 275 by Spring 2028, Edo Japan is increasingly focusing on the Ontario market as a key driver of its growth.

The brand’s expansion strategy is aimed at increasing its presence in urban street-front locations, according to Retail Insider. Approximately 75% of new openings are now street-front restaurants, marking a shift away from mall-based locations. The company’s successful launch at Yonge and College in Toronto has validated the viability of urban locations, with more planned for the city in the coming months. Edo Japan’s shift to prime street-front spaces reflects the changing demands of the market, positioning it to cater to a growing number of urban diners seeking quick, high-quality meals.

Founded in Calgary in 1979, Edo Japan has established itself as a popular choice for teriyaki meals, sushi, and has recently added menu items like ramen, poke bowls, and bubble tea. These additions have been part of the brand’s effort to appeal to younger customers and diversify its offerings. New menu items, such as the “killer broth” ramen, have been met with enthusiasm, and the poke bowls are now a permanent fixture on the menu. As part of their commitment to innovation, Edo Japan is also experimenting with additional offerings in the poke category, ensuring they remain on the cutting edge of food trends.

In Ontario, the brand is also focused on leveraging its successful franchise model, which emphasizes hands-on ownership and community engagement. Edo Japan’s leadership recognizes the importance of strong local leadership teams to support franchisees effectively, especially in markets like Ontario, where they operate 20+ stores. Regional leadership teams, specifically in Ontario, are actively working to ensure the success of new locations, and franchisee profitability remains a central focus.

With its ambitious growth plans, Edo Japan is also making strides in expanding outside of Canada. The brand launched its first U.S. store in Chandler, Arizona, and is testing localization strategies for potential future growth in the U.S. market. However, Ontario will remain the company’s primary focus for the immediate future, with additional locations planned in key urban centers across the province.

For customers, the Edo Japan experience is about more than just a meal. The company’s operational innovations, like digital ordering (which now accounts for roughly 30% of revenue), loyalty programs, and mobile ordering, aim to streamline the guest experience. Whether dining in, picking up, or ordering online, Edo Japan continues to offer high-quality meals with an emphasis on convenience and customer satisfaction.

With a commitment to Canadian sourcing and a focus on responsible growth, Edo Japan is set to expand its footprint in Ontario, providing more access to its flavorful Japanese dishes while maintaining its dedication to community, quality, and franchisee success.
