A new spot for one-of-a-kind treats is gearing up to make its Mount Pleasant debut.

Owner Derek Phillips recently announced that Vampire Penguin is planning to open at 1220 Ben Sawyer Blvd, Unit U. Phillips confirmed this news with What Now Charleston, expressing enthusiasm about the upcoming launch.

Founded in 2013 in Sacramento, California, Vampire Penguin is known for its signature ‘shaved snow,’ a dessert that puts a unique spin on traditional shaved ice. The fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth dessert comes in a variety of inventive flavors and toppings.

Indulge in decadent options like the Sweet Tooth, featuring cotton candy-flavored snow, graham crackers, marshmallows, whipped cream, and sprinkles, or the Tuxedo, a chocolate lover’s dream complete with chocolate-flavored snow, sliced almonds, strawberries, and a chocolate sauce drizzle.

Since its inception, Vampire Penguin has grown to nearly 40 locations across 13 U.S. states and Guatemala. Each store is independently owned and operated, offering unique flavor combinations and specials tailored to local tastes and seasons.

The storefront is expected to open in late January or early February 2025. In the meantime, Phillips told What Now Charleston that the Vampire Penguin food trailer will begin serving its signature sweets this weekend on Chuck Dawley Blvd, offering a taste of what’s to come.
