The Local, an ambitious and inspired eatery and bar, will soon be opening in south Austin, according to a recent report in Community Impact. The establishment will be located at 9901 Brodie Lane, Ste. 120, near Juiceland.

“The ambience will be comfortable, repeatable, but elevated for South Austin,” co-owner Tiff Wales tells What Now Austin. “It’ll be somewhere you can meet up with your grandma and go out for drinks at night.”

When Wales is asked about their menu, she bubbles over with enthusiasm and specificity.

“We’ll have scratch biscuits, cobb salad, herb-seasoned fries and a really amazing BLT, on buttery Texas toast, in which finely-minced bacon bits are actually whipped up into the mayonnaise spread,” she says, (This take on the classic American sandwich, she notes, an invention of Nate Wales, her husband and co-owner).

“We’ll have milkshakes — you can add booze to them if you want. We’ll also have excellent, classic cocktails — a full bar program. Also at dinner, we’ll serve the homemade king ranch casserole. We’ll also have to-go and catering services.”

Wales explains that the restaurant’s name and guiding concept are inspired by Welsh taverns and the relationships locals have with them.

“When you go to Wales, people say ‘I’m going to go get a pint at my local’. When people say that, they’re referring to a neighborhood spot,” Wales explains.

“We live here in South Austin. This is our neighborhood. We love south Austin. We recognize that it’s an underserved area. We want to provide a full-service, sit-down place—we want to be people’s local.”

Until this exciting new establishment opens its doors in late summer or early fall, readers can find the preview of the restaurant at the couple’s food truck, The Local Auxiliary, at 2510 S Congress Ave.
