Chef Dominique Ansel is baking up a new concept to bring to 64 University Place this spring.
A spokesperson with the bakery shared with What Now New York that Papa d’Amour will be inspired by Asian bread culture, a nod to his children’s heritage. The name is also inspired by his children: it is the nickname they have for him “usually when they want something.”
“I wanted to create something for my kids that celebrates their cultural heritage,” Ansel states on the Papa d’Amour website. “It’s not something I grew up with, but I’ve grown to love it as part of my family’s travels and memories.”
While the menu is still under development, customers can expect fluffy shokupans, milk breads, egg tarts, steamed breads and more.
Though an exact opening timeline is dependent on construction, a spokesperson shared that the team is aiming for an April opening.
Ansel is well-known on the bakery scene. A James Beard Award-winning pastry chef, he owns Dominique Ansel Bakery and Dominique Ansel Workshop in New York, and Dominique Ansel Las Vegas at Caesars Palace. He is also known for creating the Cronut.
