Neil’s Bahr, Houston’s favorite hangout for video game enthusiasts, trivia lovers, and comic book fans, is preparing for a big move to 3409 McKinney St in the heart of East Downtown. The move comes as the original location at 2006 Walker St faces closure due to the Texas Department of Transportation’s expansion of I-45, which will run through the current site.
Despite the move, Owner Neil Fernandez is committed to maintaining the quirky, laid-back vibe that has made Neil’s Bahr a local favorite. “We plan to keep the new location as close to the old Neil’s as possible, but with newer/better amenities,” he told What Now Houston. Patrons can look forward to upgrades like improved seating and, for the first time ever, a full cocktail menu featuring their signature drinks.
One of the bar’s top priorities is reviving its beloved weekly events, such as Trivia Nights and video game tournaments. Fernandez is also considering adding a second karaoke night and Bingo to the mix, ensuring that the new Neil’s Bahr continues to be a go-to destination for both regulars and newcomers. “Hopefully we’ll add more free-play arcade cabinets,” Fernandez mentioned, hinting at exciting changes ahead.
While the move is bittersweet, Neil’s Bahr is ready to embrace the future with its new McKinney Street location. With a blend of familiar comforts and fresh updates, the geek bar aims to deliver an even better experience for Houston’s pop culture crowd.
“We’d like to be in our new location in December [2024] but it could end up being January-February [2025,” said Fernandez in regards to his Re-Grand Opening goal. He has confirmed that the current Neil’s Bahr will continue operations until the end of 2024, or until the new location is ready—whichever comes first.
