According to a recent permit filing, Kilo D’Cofi will soon open its doors in the Downtown area, located at 600 SW Pine St.

“Our goal opening date for the soft opening will be on February 3rd, 2024. We will have multiple phases, and the February date will be a part of phase one. When we initially open, we will likely only be open during the weekends. Both my wife and I are Mexican, and we hope to be able to have a space to showcase our culture,” Carlos Sanchez Huizar, the co-owner, told What Now Portland.

“Our drinks will be ones that we grew up drinking, and will have a family touch overall, beyond just what we grew up with. Kilo will be a space that shows what Mexican hospitality is all about, a place that comes from a place of community and love.”

“We both grew up in South Central LA. With that, we will be bringing the aesthetics of South LA to Kilo. It won’t be a typical coffee aesthetic, and will also have graffiti inspiration. We’re providing Mexican coffee, explicitly sourcing Mexican coffee beans and sourcing from similar backgrounds. We want to make sure to provide fair trade and sustainability, and everybody is getting paid what they’re supposed to.”

“I will be co-owning Kilo with my wife, Selene Contreras-Sanchez. At the heart of why we decided to open Kilo was to expand. We both come from a family of entrepreneurs, where both of our families own multiple businesses. We wanted to invest in something that could leave a mark, especially thinking about our legacy, but also the city.”

“Kilo connects to our family ties with coffee and tea. It was common for us to have a cup of coffee, pan dulce, or other things for the good and bad moments in our family. We are finalizing the menu, but are still working on it. Pan dulce will be on the menu for sure, and we are thinking about other options such as breakfast tacos.”

“With Latino/Mexican culture, it isn’t always welcoming for a wide array of reasons, and it’s not always easy to make partnerships/alliances, due to that it’s important to us to be able to build healthy relationships that boost everybody up. While of course, our goal is to sell coffee, at the end of the day, we want people to see the spot and want to be there to connect and relate. We want to continue to build community and be known for a welcoming environment for everybody, it’s important to us,” Carlos added.
