A brand new Mexican restaurant, Cien Fuegos Restaurant, is getting ready to open in Phoenix at 1550 N 16th St.

The new restaurant will move into the former home of La Cocina Economica later this year, according to a recent liquor license application. Owner Ulysses Verdugo was recently approved of the liquor license but tells What Now Phoenix that the team is behind on the opening and doesn’t plan to open for at least another month or so. While Verdugo was unable to provide an exact opening date, customers can expect plenty of delicious Mexican food at this new establishment.

This will be an excellent location for the new restaurant when it opens later this year. Cien Fuegos, which translates to 100 fires, will sit near a bust McDowell Road, where a handful of other businesses and restaurants will create plenty of food traffic for the new restaurant. In addition to being in a great location, it will sit near Banner University Medical Center Phoenix and Coronado Park, making it an excellent option for health workers and anyone heading to the park for a picnic.

The only downside of this location will be the fierce competition from surrounding restaurants. Taco Mich & Bar #1 and Filiberto’s Mexican Food reside on the corner of McDowell Road and North 16th Street, with a handful more competitors on the other side of the Interstate 10 Freeway. Another local competitor, Cielo Rojo, recently announced a temporary closure following a fire earlier this month.
