After starting as an illicit pop-up on the owners’ Bywater porch and moving to its current residency at the Bywater Brew Pub, Chance in Hell SnoBalls is closing in on an opening for its long-awaited brick-and-mortar location at 805 Louisa St., which is also in the Bywater.
Chance in Hell is known for its unique, artisanal snowballs. Using syrups made by hand with organic fruit, some recent flavor offerings at the Bywater Brew Pub have included watermelon mint, key lime pie, and lemon rosemary cream with a drizzle of olive oil. According to a report from NOLA.com, the permanent location will offer many of the same popular flavors and some new savory items, such as a range of different popcorns. Owners are also currently waiting on a liquor license for “adult” sno-balls. The new permanent location is set to open by either the end of this summer or the start of next summer.
Chance in Hell was founded as an illicit pop-up by locally-based burlesque and drag performers Kitten ‘N Lou. Through word-of-mouth, the hell-themed sno-ball stand developed a cult following and that attention eventually compelled city officials to come knocking. The pop-up was temporarily shut down in August 2023 for not having a proper permit. At the time, the owners said they hoped to fly under the radar until the Louisa Street location became available.
