The team behind two Sichuan restaurants in Memphis is branching out with a new concept.

According to the I Love Memphis blog, the owners of Petals of a Peony plan to open Little Petals Chinese at 149 Madison Ave, in the former Smurfey’s Smokehouse BBQ & Breakfast space.

A representative for the restaurant told What Now Memphis that the smaller downtown spinoff will feature a selection of dishes that made Petals of a Peony popular, but with a more casual twist. The menu will focus on American Chinese takeout favorites like General Tso’s chicken and lo mein.

“The food quality will be the same, just more accessible with slimmer options,” said the representative.

Additionally, he mentioned that the Madison Ave eatery will be the first of “a few” Little Petals locations to open in the area, with another undisclosed East Memphis site currently in the works.

Petals of a Peony debuted its first location in Cordova in August 2023, followed by a second Overton Square spot in June 2024. The ownership group also runs Flame Ramen, which previously had locations in Downtown Memphis and Cordova but now operates exclusively on Union Ave.

The first Little Petals Chinese location is expected to open in early 2025. Stay tuned for updates on the other restaurants.

CORRECTION: This article previously stated that the eatery would be located in Midtown. It will, in fact, be located in Downtown Memphis.
