A new bookshop/café called Philosophers & Fools is in the works at 50 Bogard Street in Cannonborough Elliotborough.

Charleston locals Michael Bourke and Jenny Ferrara are behind the venture, which filed construction permits this week. In an online profile, the shop is referred to as “a cozy neighborhood bookstore, bar, and gathering space in Charleston, S.C.,” offering a “thoughtfully curated selection of new books” and “a space where all are welcome to come in and sit down, enjoy a glass of wine or a coffee, read a book, or meet up with a friend.”

The historic building, at the corner of Bogard St and Rose Ln, previously held the offices of an interior design firm called B. Berry. Built in 1865, 50 Bogard contains retail space on the ground level with residential above, in kind with the mixed-use structure of the Cannonborough Elliotborough neighborhood.

The owners are currently petitioning the city for a zoning variance to allow the sale and consumption of beer and wine at the location, a request which will be reviewed at the Zoning Board meeting on September 20. In documents submitted to the city, the expected hours of operation are Tuesday-Wednesday 11 A.M. to 8 P.M., Thursday-Saturday 11 A.M. to 10 P.M., and Sunday 12 P.M. to 5 P.M.

An expected opening date has not been shared publicly.
