In a bold move, Sun Holdings has successfully acquired Uncle Julio’s, a casual Mexican dining brand. The acquisition, announced in a January press release, reportedly was finalized at a foreclosure auction on December 19, 2024.
Founded in 1986, Uncle Julio’s is renowned for its authentic Mexican flavors and vibrant dining experiences. Nation’s Restaurant News reports that it has 39 locations across the U.S., and is known for its signature dishes such as mesquite-grilled fajitas, table-side guacamole, and the ever-popular Chocolate Piñata.
The Uncle Julio’s acquisition includes its subsidiary Hacienda Colorado, which the business took possession of in 2019, the Gazette reported. That brand has four locations in the state: Colorado Springs, Lone Tree, Westminster, and Wheat Ridge.
Sun Holdings, based in Farmers Branch, Texas, operates over 1,800 locations across various food service and retail brands, including Burger King, Popeyes, and IHOP. It also recently purchased Taco Bueno and Freebirds World Burrito, both staples in the fast-casual Mexican segments.
