After serving Charlotte’s Fourth Ward for the past seven years, the owners of Poplar Tapas have announced the restaurant is closing at 224 W 10th St.
Co-owners Lucia Zapata Griffith and Bruno Macchiavello are getting ready to close the restaurant after October 7, with regular hours planned for the last week and live music and bottles of wine for sale on the restaurant’s last two days of operation, according to Charlotte Observer. While this news may sadden some, the owners are planning a new venture once Poplar Tapas closes. The new concept has no exact opening date, as the owners are focusing on the Poplar Tapas’ last days.
“This is not a goodbye but a brief interlude,” The owners said in an email to CharlotteFive. “We ask our patrons and the community to stay tuned for an exciting new dining experience that will continue Poplar’s legacy of building community around the table.”
While the two come from vastly different backgrounds, Poplar Tapas proved the two are capable of creating something amazing. Griffith is an architect who illustrated his talent through the restaurant’s design, offering an international feel. Macchiavello is an internationally-trained chef who helped open Viva Chicken and Yunta. Before landing in Charlotte, Macchiavello studied in Peru, Italy, and Brazil.
The two created quite the atmosphere at Poplar Tapas, where customers often stayed late for live music and a welcoming atmosphere. The Peruvian restaurant made its name in the historic Morrison House by offering classic dishes such as ceviche and Pisco Sours.
