La Huasteca, a Mexican restaurant in Grand Rapids that suddenly closed its doors, is looking to reopen at 1634 Coit Ave. NE in Creston. The restaurant will also change its name to Iker’s Tacos in memorial of the owner’s late son who passed away last year. This news was first seen in Crain’s Grand Rapids.

Owner Salvador Oliveros received a notice from La Huasteca’s previous landlord earlier this year that the lease will not be renewed and the restaurant must be moved out in 30 days, citing planned renovation as reasons behind the eviction. Since then, Oliveros have sold some of the restaurant’s popular dishes at the Creston Farmers Market.

The new location is only a few blocks away from the original La Huasteca location and the owner was getting close to signing the lease, according to news reported by Fox 17 on Sept. 19. Currently, Oliveros is raising funds to cover moving expenses on GoFundMe.

“Since we closed, we used all of our savings, all of our credit cards. So basically, we used all of our money. Now that we have a chance to sign a lease, we don’t have money,” Oliveros told Fox 17. If all goes as planned, Iker’s Tacos will open within the next few months.

The new name, Iker’s Tacos, honors Oliveros’ son who passed last September. Iker loved the family restaurant so much that he even had a designated booth at the old location. To honor Iker’s life, Oliveros will also offer a kid’s eat free special every Monday.

“We’re just gonna put a little love in this place so he can be proud, really proud of us,” Oliveros told Fox 17.
