Gerry Torres, founder of City Tacos, is set to debut a new restaurant concept, Fonda del Barrio, at 2234 Logan Avenue in San Diego’s Barrio Logan neighborhood.
Torres tells What Now San Diego that the 2,500-square-foot space, formerly the home of Barrio Dog, is currently undergoing a full interior remodel and plans to open in late 2025. Fonda del Barrio aims to offer an immersive dining experience inspired by Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos, including Oaxaca, San Miguel de Allende, San Cristóbal, and Tlaquepaque. The restaurant will feature traditional, “super old school” regional Mexican cuisine crafted by longtime Executive Chef and partner Eduardo Baeza.
The design will evoke a hacienda-style atmosphere, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of these regions. Complementing the menu, Fonda del Barrio will offer a curated selection of Latin-inspired craft cocktails, craft Mexican beers, and popular non-alcoholic beverages. Torres envisions the restaurant as a source of pride for the Latino community, celebrating ancestral roots and cultural identity.
This venture marks another significant step in Torres’ culinary journey. Since founding City Tacos in 2014, he has expanded the brand across San Diego County, with locations from North Park to the University of Southern California campus. In late 2024, Torres introduced Tour de Tapas in La Mesa’s Village district, offering European-inspired small plates. With Fonda del Barrio, Torres continues to explore diverse culinary traditions while honoring his heritage.
