New Dive Bar ‘Gussied Up’ Aims to Bring Burgers, Beers and Community to Downtown Memphis

The trio behind Memphis’ Hard Times Deli is expanding their footprint with a new concept that blends comfort food, community vibes and classic dive bar charm.

A new dive bar is on the way to Downtown Memphis’ Edge District.

Harrison Downing, Cole Jeanes and Schuyler O’Brien—owners of Hard Times Deli—are planning to open Gussied Up next door at 655 Marshall Avenue, Suite 103. Their deli launched in February, and the upcoming bar marks the group’s latest venture.

The team is seeking a $30,000 grant from the Center City Development Corporation, an affiliate board of the Downtown Memphis Commission. According to their application, the total budget for the 1,100-square-foot project is $240,000.

In their proposal, the trio describes themselves as lifelong chefs passionate about building spaces that feel like home and reflect the neighborhoods they serve.

O’Brien has worked at several Memphis restaurants, including Catherine & Mary’s, Hog Wild and City Silo. Jeanes, a graduate of L’École Culinaire in Missouri, is the chef and owner of Kinfolk Country Kitchen. Downing has restaurant experience in both Denver and Memphis, including time working under O’Brien at Hog Wild.

The menu at Gussied Up will feature food from their burger pop-up, Secret Smash Society, served through a hidden drive-thru window. Bar favorites like wings, street tacos and nachos will also be offered, with a seasonal twist thanks to locally sourced ingredients.

Inside, guests can expect a classic dive bar vibe with neon signage, a checkerboard floor and a laid-back atmosphere. The owners also plan to host comedy nights, live music and Memphis sports watch parties—or simply offer a spot to enjoy a burger and a beer.

The Center City Development Corporation is scheduled to review the grant application at its upcoming meeting on May 22.
