The inspection noted evidence of insect activity and a lack of adequate vermin-proofing in the kitchen area. The facility also lacked properly built and maintained floors and walls.

Food items were not properly separated to prevent cross-contamination. The cafe failed to produce a food safety certificate at the time of inspection.

Winchell’s Donut House

Winchell’s Donut House is a regional donut chain with multiple locations. Along with sweet donuts, it is known for serving muffins, quick snacks, and other baked goods. A health inspection was conducted at the outlet situated in Bell Gardens.

It was observed that wiping cloths at the donut shop preparation area were not stored in a sanitizing solution. The inspector observed vermin infestation, which was a major violation of the food safety code.

The inspector observed that the hot and cold food holding temperature requirements were not followed by the donut shop. Nonfood contact surfaces were found to be unclean and in need of deep cleaning. Plumbing deficiencies were noted, including the absence of required backflow prevention devices.

Any food safety violation within a food facility can be the reason for foodborne illnesses. To protect the overall health of the community, it is necessary to keep a check on the operations and compliance status of facilities within the region.
