Porto’s Bakery & Cafe is expanding its Southern California footprint with its first Inland Empire location, a new bakery planned for Ontario in 2028.
The family-owned business is preparing to bring its bakery and cafe concept closer to customers who have traveled from the region to visit its existing stores. The new location will be part of an 8.6-acre commercial development at the southwest corner of Archibald Avenue and Inland Empire Boulevard, according to The Orange County Register.
Founded by Rosa Porto in 1976, the bakery has grown into a Southern California chain known for its Cuban-inspired pastries, cakes and savory offerings. Its signature items include Cheese Rolls, Potato Balls and the Refugiado, a guava and cheese strudel.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the bakery projected to open the following year.
Betty Porto, vice president and co-owner of Porto’s Bakery, told What Now Los Angeles that the Ontario restaurant will retain the same bakery and cafe format found at the company’s other locations, including takeout and dine-in service and a full coffee bar.
The Ontario location will feature a different layout from Porto’s existing bakeries, with more space for customers to dine indoors. “It’s a very windy city, so we’re gonna have a lot more inside dining,” Porto said.
The new restaurant will have nearly twice as much indoor dining space as the company’s other locations. The Ontario bakery will offer customers more opportunities to sit inside rather than depend on outdoor dining.
The expansion responds to years of requests from customers across the Inland Empire. Porto said the company regularly hears from guests who travel from Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga and surrounding communities to visit its existing bakeries, including the West Covina location.
The Ontario development will include approximately 50,000 square feet of commercial space across three buildings, with restaurant, cafe and retail tenants, as well as an outdoor plaza.
Porto said the company is excited to join the Ontario community after hearing for years from customers in the Inland Empire who have traveled to its existing bakeries. She said the team is committed to maintaining the quality and service customers expect while keeping prices consistent across its locations.
“We bring our passion, our love of what we do,” Porto told What Now Los Angeles.
