More than a year after the historic restaurant closed, Cole’s is set to reopen this late November at 118 E. 6th Street in Downtown Los Angeles, with new owners Jeremy Fall and Sean Maloney leading its return.

The reopening will bring back the century-old restaurant widely credited with inventing the French Dip sandwich, according to Los Angeles Times.

Maloney confirmed to What Now Los Angeles that the team is in the midst of preparations for the reopening. Fall, a Los Angeles-born chef and restaurateur, acquired Cole’s this summer after spending a year working to save the business.

He grew up two blocks away and spent much of his childhood at the restaurant, according to the announcement. The partners also plan to introduce a new concept in the former Varnish space, adding another project to the property.

No details about that concept have been shared yet. Its return follows a period of uncertainty after the restaurant closed last year, prompting questions about whether the longtime neighborhood institution would reopen. The new ownership plans to preserve its historic identity while updating the restaurant and its menu.

The French Dip will remain the centerpiece of the menu, with five versions: the Original prime rib, pastrami, turkey, braised pork, and braised lamb. A vegan mushroom and onion dip will also be offered. The sandwiches will come with Cole’s au jus, confit garlic Dijonnaise, and house-made pickles.

In a press release shared with What Now Los Angeles, Fall said the team has kept the original French Dip recipe while upgrading its ingredients.
