A beloved brunch destination in Midtown Sacramento has temporarily closed its doors following a late-night fire.
The Porch Restaurant & Bar, known for its California spin on Southern comfort food, was damaged by flames that broke out at its 1815 K Street space around 11:15 p.m. on Monday, July 14, 2025. No one was injured in the incident, according to fire officials.
While the Sacramento Fire Department continues to investigate the cause, the blaze originated near the rear of the building and spread into the storage area, causing significant water and smoke damage along with possible wall and ceiling damage inside.
“It is great that no one was hurt in the fire, and it seems it was started right outside our back storage area,” owner John Lopez shared in an email to What Now Sacramento. “We are very lucky the first responders did such a great job on controlling the structural damage to only the back of the building. We are so grateful for their quick action!”
Since opening in late 2011, The Porch has become a neighborhood staple, serving breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner made with locally-sourced ingredients. Menu highlights include beignets, skillet cornbread, buttermilk fried chicken, and gumbo.
While insurance delays have slowed down the recovery timeline, Lopez says the team is aiming to reopen in about a month. In the meantime, staff are being supported through unemployment or reassigned shifts at the restaurant’s sister spot, Capitol Garage, located just down the road at 1500 K Street. The team is also personally contacting all guests with upcoming reservations.
Locals looking to lend their support are encouraged to dine at Capitol Garage, which offers modern American fare for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus a popular weekend brunch with a wide selection of vegan options.
