The Pass, a beloved artisan deli and market, is set to open a second location.
Renowned chef Anthony Marini will bring the shop to Mount Pleasant’s Northcutt Plaza, the team announced on Instagram.
“A lot of our customer base came from not only downtown but Mount Pleasant, so it seemed like the natural thing to do,” Marini told What Now Charleston. “We’re doing very well here downtown and we obviously wanted to see the trajectory go upward.”
The menu will mirror the original outpost at 207A Philip St.
“It will be primarily the same menu, however, we might have a couple of things extra to cater towards the Mount Pleasant crowd,” Marini said.
He continued, “I’m always excited about our breakfast sandwiches because I like eggs. We also have “The #39” and we have “The #16,” which are two news ones, but nobody can beat the “Such a Nice Italian Boy,” which is our standalone sandwich that everyone gravitates toward.”
“The #39,” includes mozzarella frittata, prosciutto, oven-dried tomatoes and housemade taleggio aioli on toasted ciabatta, and “The #16,” with cacio e pepe frittata, stracciatella and ’nduja on toasted ciabatta. “Such a Nice Italian Boy” features mortadella with pistachio, hot and sweet soppressata, chili relish, burrata, red onion, greens, tomato, sharp provolone and housemade Italian vinaigrette on ciabatta.
Marini looks forward to expanding his footprint in the Mount Pleasant area.
“I’m just excited about getting acquainted to a new group of guests. I’m very hospitality minded and really like taking care of people. We figured out a very simple way to do it with a really, really good sandwich. I’m just looking forward to meeting a whole bunch of people,” he said.
Marini said The Pass should debut by late November, though he has not announced an official opening date. For updates, visit the shop’s website and follow along on Instagram.
Who is Chef Anthony Marini?
Chef Anthony Marini, a Philadelphia native, graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, according to his official website.
He moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where he opened his first restaurant, AMBA, as executive chef and partner. Two years later, he launched (local) restaurant and cocktail bar, earning multiple accolades, including four stars from The Birmingham News and recognition as one of the city’s “Top Three Chefs” and “Top Three Restaurants.”
Marini also won season two of CNBC’s Restaurant Start-Up, pitching a concept focused on crudo and sous-vide cooking.
Crudo is an Italian-style raw dish, usually featuring thinly sliced fish or seafood dressed with oil, citrus, or herbs. Sous-vide cooking involves sealing food in a bag and cooking it in a temperature-controlled water.
In 2021, he opened The Pass in downtown Charleston and also launched The Italian Boy (After Dark) inside the same space. The concept offers a multicourse, two-hour tasting experience served in a semi-private setting, according to the restaurant’s website.
Now, The Pass is expanding to Mount Pleasant.
