Wheat Ridge Meats, a new butcher shop owned by Jeff Prah, is preparing to open at 5650 W 29th Ave. But the business’s arrival is unintentionally causing a bit of confusion, according to Westword, due to its likeness to the former tenant of the space.

The building the company is moving into was previously home to Wheat Ridge Poultry & Meats. That business has been there for nearly 80 years before it was seized by the city for tax reasons. The debt has since been mostly settled, new owners have taken over that business, and they have rebranded in a new location.

But the first shop isn’t happy that a company with a similar name is (literally) taking its place. Wheat Ridge Poultry & Meats posted on Instagram a few weeks ago that they sent a cease and desist letter; the outcome of that has not been announced.

As for the new butchery, it’s owned by Jeff Prah, who is well known in the Denver deli meats scene. He runs Oscar’s Eats deli inside Leevers Locavore, and previously operated a butcher shop called Hook and Hock there as well.
