A Hyattsville distillery team is preparing to introduce some extra flavor and whimsy to the Takoma Park cocktail scene. Sangfroid Distilling, owned and operated by brothers-in-law Jeff Harner and Nate Groenendyk, is moving into a historic former bank building and bringing innovative brandies and plenty of imagination with it, reports Bethesda Magazine.

Distilling brandy and pouring drinks will be a very different life for the 6950 Carroll Avenue building. The space served as a Bank of America until 2021. The move has been a long time coming; Harner explains that the concept outgrew its 5130 Baltimore Avenue space relatively quickly, saying: “we have about 1,000 square feet, which includes both our production space and our cocktail bar. And we more or less maxed out our capacity in terms of production on Day One. We’ve been in earnest looking for additional space for the last four or five years.”

The Takoma Park storefront will give Sangfroid around 5,000 square feet of space, a third of which will become the cocktail bar and tasting room component of the concept. The remainder will be dedicated to distilling, a prospect which Harner is looking forward to. He states: “I’ve been wanting to do apricots for years and years and I just don’t have the tank space [in the Hyattsville location]. So having that additional capacity allows us to start doing those other cool things that we’ve been wanting to do for a really long time but haven’t been able to.”
