A Beloved NYC Vegan Restaurant Is Closing After More Than Two Decades

Red Bamboo in New York City’s Greenwich Village has announced it will close after 24 years of operation on Feb. 28, 2026.

Red Bamboo is one of the industry-leading vegetarian and vegan restaurants in Greenwich Village. The restaurant has declared its permanent closure following 24 years of operations. It played a key role in the city’s vegan revolution, introducing healthy plant-based food to the community.

Red Bamboo to Close After 24 Years in Greenwich Village

Red Bamboo, founded in 2002, was among the early vegan and plant‑based restaurants in New York City when such menus were less common. Its relaxed atmosphere and indulgent plant-based menu have drawn steady crowds over the years.

Fried sandwiches using plant-based chicken, barbecue-style seitan dishes, and loaded wraps are among its signature offerings. These were designed to replicate the flavors and textures of traditional fast-casual fare.

The restaurant also gained fame because of its vegan milkshakes and desserts, which became iconic among its long-term customers.

Red Bamboo, located on West 4th Street and owned by Jade Wong, a member of the queer community, will close on February 28. The owner cited, “Much love from my dad and I, we hope to celebrate with you before the 28th. Bye for now and thanks for the memories.”

IIn the closure announcement video, Jade Wong mentioned that they have tried everything they could in the past year to save Red Bamboo. Financial challenges affect individual businesses from time to time; this time, it has hit Red Bamboo, leading to its closure.

From a GoFundMe campaign to selling merch, nothing has saved the restaurant, which has been struggling since the pandemic. The owner grew emotional while reflecting on the restaurant’s 24-year journey.

Despite these challenges, Red Bamboo leaves a lasting legacy. The restaurant made a significant contribution to the development of the city’s vegetarian and vegan dining culture.

They served easy and decadent plant-based food when such choices were much rarer. The fact that Red Bamboo struck a balance between indulgence and variety allowed it to attract both vegan and non-vegan diners.

Red Bamboo earned attention through local word of mouth and visits from well-known celebrities. The restaurant leaves a lasting impact, remembered for its comfort-driven menu, inclusive attitude toward plant-based food, and its role in diversifying the city’s vegan food options.
