A new taqueria, Tacos Awiwis, is coming to Covington, according to a liquor license filing. The upcoming restaurant is opening on 104 Lake Dr., the former space of Lee’s Hamburgers, which moved to 1105 N. Collins Blvd. last year.

Tacos Awiwis is the latest concept from Habs Hospitality Group, founded by Dulce and Omar Lugo. The pair started their hospitality group in 2015, opening Mexican restaurant Habeneros, which now has locations in Madisonville, Covington, Metairie, Mandeville and Atlanta.

Over a decade the restaurant group has also opened Whiskey Kitchen, a Slidell collaboration between Habs Hospitality and Whiskey Tavern, and most recently, Social, a modern Peruvian restaurant in New Orleans that serves  Nikkei food, a blend of Japanese and Peruvian food that came about as a result of Japanese laborers in Peru during the 20th century.

An exact opening date for Awiwis is unclear, but on opening day, the restaurant will be giving out two free tacos per guest, up to a grand total of 200 tacos.
